There seems to be quite a bit of confusion around about the difference between systems and automation. Systems are simply a way of doing something repeatedly:

What is a system?

“System: a set of principles or procedures according to which something is done; an organized scheme or method. ” (thank you Google!)

So what is automation?

Machine making question marksSystems must not to be confused with automation which describes a system being used automatically based on a trigger. Automation is great, it can allow you to get lots of really dull things done quickly and saves time and money. But, and this is a pretty big but, it will only work properly if the underlying system is right. If you have taken the time to tweak the processes or procedures that underpin the system so that they are doing the exact right thing. Otherwise you are just automating errors and no-one wants that!

In my previous blog about the importance of removing decisions from your life I started to get you thinking about what systems you might be able to use, even if you are a really small business. One that might be useful for you is making sure your blog posts are getting you the most value for money. To show you how simple a ‘system’ can be I have made you a checklist (or system) for sharing your posts. It has satisfying little boxes to tick off your progress and it takes the brain work out of sharing your hard work and connecting with your customers….
